Venous
Insufficiency is a general term to describe
abnormal venous return. Spider
veins and varicose veins are
the result of venous insufficiency
involving the superficial veins.
Impaired return of blood to the
heart results in pooling of blood
and increased pressure in one
or more of the deep, superficial
or perforating vein systems. Vein reflux is very common
problem and affects up to 30%
of women and 18% of men. Most
will have mild cases such as spider
veins or varicose veins with mild
symptoms.
